Digital Imaging Class

Digital Imaging is a class I took while attending Brigham Young University Idaho. We had to take images and then we learned the many different types of editing that can be do to them. That is what this blog section is about.

Cutouts
To do the cutout I used the rectangular marquee to select the part of the image I wanted to remove. Then I created a new layer and filled it with white. I then used the Quick Selection Tool to select the object I wanted to "cut out." I used the Refine Edge tool to add some feathering and smooth out the edges. I also added a little contrast to produce a slight shadow. After I refined the edges I copied the layer and drug it on top of the other layers. Putting the part I "cut out" on top of the white.

Mill House: 9-29-10; 4pm; Bannack, MT; f 2.8; 1/500; Kodak P850
To create this cutout I used the Quick Selection Tool and selected the pumpkin. I then used the Refine Edge tool to add feathering and smoothness to the pumpkin. I also added a little contrast to give it a slight shadow. I then inversed my selection and deleted all of the background.

Night and Light
Streaming Lights: 11-10-10; 10pm; Rexburg, ID; f 5; 8 sec; Kodak P850
To create this picture of the lines across the image I put my camera on a tripod and used the self-timer, set the Shutter priority to 8 seconds and took a picture of cars driving past with their lights on.

Joy Light Painting: 11-10-10; 11:30pm; Rexburg, ID; f 6.3; 13 sec; Kodak P850
For this picture I put my camera on a tripod and used the self-timer, set my Shutter priority to 13 seconds, and used my cell phone to paint the word joy.

Fat Cats Motion Painting: 11-10-10; 10pm; Rexburg, ID; f 8; 1 sec; Kodak P850
For this picture I put my camera on Shutter priority 1 second, took the picture and moved my camera quickly back and forth.

 Poster Print
Vivid Sunset 24x36 size
10-18-10; 6pm; Idaho Falls, ID
Kodak P850; Program Mode; f 3.2; 1/30

I was driving in Idaho Falls one night and happened to have my camera when I saw this beautiful sunset. I immediately pulled over and took a few pictures. I had my camera on the program mode and just focused on the sky, so it made the trees and house black. I put the photo in photoshop and changed the levels a little, added some saturation, added the 3 borders, and added my signature. To add the borders, I made the picture size 18x30, then added extra canvas to the outside and just eye dropped the color into the border. The border size all around the image is 3 inches on each side.

 Photolusion
Balancing Water Bottle Photolusion: To create this photolusion I cut Kimberly out of the rest of the other photo so it was just her alone. I then brightened her up a little so she would better match the water bottle picture so the photolusion would look more like it belonged. I then drug the picture of Kimberly to the picture of the water bottle and positioned it just on top of the water bottle. I also darkened the water bottle picture up a little so it would match more. This is how I created the photolusion of Kimberly balancing on a water bottle.

Photo Journal
A week of photos Photo journal: October 25 - 31, 2010. The template for my photo journal layout is just below. Each picture is part of a clipping mask, so I can delete just the picture and the border and background will all still be there. I put the picture above the layer of the border I want to put it in, then on the layers palette I right clicked on the picture layer and click "create clipping mask" and it puts it inside the border, so all that's showing of the picture is whats inside that mask.

This is the template I used for my photo journal. , the one below is the original I got from the class instructions. Because my pictures were different orientations I had to change the template to fit the pictures I had. I also changed the sizes a little, took out the wording on the original, and moved the ribbon title shape up.

Edge Effects
Flexible Vignette: To add this border I added a new blank layer then inserted black into that layer. I then used the Rectangular Marquee tool with high feathering and drew a box inside the edges of the image, then I deleted it, which left the opaque border around the center of the image. Then I reduced the opacity of the layer the border is on.

Jada: 10-23-10; 10am; Hurricane, UT; f 3.6; 1/500; Kodak P850

Burned Border: To create this border I first copied the image layer then added the Multiply Blending Mode to darken the exposure of the new layer. I then used the Rectangular Marquee tool with a feathering of 0 to draw a border inside the edge of the image, then I deleted the inside of the rectangle. I then reduced the opacity of the border layer to make it a little lighter and I put a mask on the layer to make parts of it that were really dark a little lighter. Lastly I added an orange stroke border inside the border.

Chevy Truck: 10-23-10; 11am; Hurricane, UT; f 2.8; 1/320; Kodak P850
Double Fade Border: To add this border I first cropped my image to 9 x 7 inches. Then I added an inch white canvas extension to each side. Next I added a Shape Layer white rectangle to the inside of the image leaving a gap to show the image around the outside. I then added a layer mask to the shape layer. Then I put a Fill Pixels black rectangle inside the white rectangle with about a .25 inch white strip showing. Because it was a mask rectangle it made the white disappear. I then reduced the opacity of the narrow white layer to 60%. Next I put 2 Filter-Blur-Motion Blurs on the middle mask layer. The first with the settings of Angle: 0; and Distance: 45px. And the 2nd Angle: 90; and Distance: 45px.

Levels Adjustment
For this image I put all of my jewelry on the scanner, turned out all the lights (to get the black background) and scanned it into my computer.

Beachwear Collage
For this collage I scanned in my swim suit, flip flops, and my beach hat. I then put the beach hat in Photoshop and masked out the center of the hat. I put the swim suit behind the hat so it would come through the masked out part of the hat. I then put the flip flops on top of the swim suit, but under the hat and brought the opacity down to 62% so you could see through them to the swim suit.

Portrait Edits
This is the edited photo. I took the second photo below and put that color into this one. I used the match color feature in Photoshop and changed the luminosity and fade a little bit to make it look better.

Celestia: 10-19-10; 8pm; Idaho Falls, ID; f 2.8; 1/30; Kodak P850

Celestia 2: 10-19-10; 8pm; Idaho Falls, ID; f 2.8; 1/30; Kodak P850

For this portrait copied the layer and smoothed out her skin and got rid of some blemishes using the paintbrush tool with a low opacity and flow. I also adjusted the levels to make her a little brighter.

Daina: 10-19-10; 9pm; Rexburg, ID; f 2.8; 1/30; Kodak P850

I changed the color of her shirt using the replace tool in Photoshop. I selected her shirt and brought the hue down to a blue, then brought the saturation down to make it a gray, then brought the lightness down to change the tint of the gray.

Camera Raw Edit
I edited this photo in Adobe Bridge using Camera Raw. I used the Adjustment Brush on the blue and red in the cabinet. I selected all of the red and added .50 exposure, 17 contrast, and 33 saturation. For the blue took down the exposure by 1.05 and added 58 contrast, 98 saturation, 14 clarity, and 14 sharpness.

These photographs are meant to show a reverse shallow depth of field with the foreground focused and the background focus. In the first photo I focused on the wood pole so the house in the background would be blurry. In the second photo I focused on the house so the wood pole in the foreground would be blurry.

Bannack Action Blur and Freeze
Alone: 09-29-10; 2pm; Bannack, MT; f 22; 1024 sec; Canon EOS Rebel T2i; Bulb Shutter

For this picture I used a camera that has a bulb setting. I held down the button for about 26 seconds. For the first 7 seconds I had Rose stay in that position. Then we put a paper over the lens so no light could get in, then we removed it for another 21 seconds so the background could come through in the picture.

Kimberly: 09-29-10; 5pm; Bannack, MT; f 2.7; 1/500; Sony DSC-H50

I took this picture in the entrance of the Bannack Hotel. Kimberly is jumping off the stairs. I held the button down halfway and waited for her to jump, then took the picture.

Pig: 09-25-10; 3pm; Idaho Falls Tautphaus Park Zoo; f 3.6; 1/200; Kodak P850
Some of my favorite pictures at the zoo were of the everyday farm animals. This pig was just laying there and I zoomed in to get this shot.

Llama: 09-25-10; 3pm; Idaho Falls Tautphaus Park Zoo; f 2.8; 1/320; Kodak P850
This llama was hard to get a shot of him looking at me. He was walking around a lot and I really wanted him to look at me so I had my camera ready and snapped it.

Lion: 09-25-10; 3pm; Idaho Falls Tautphaus Park Zoo; f 3.6; 1/500; Kodak P850
I zoomed in and got this pictures while his head was up and looking around.

Flamingo: 09-25-10; 2pm; Idaho Falls Tautphaus Park Zoo; f 3.2; 1/250; Kodak P850
This flamingo was away from the group of them so I zoomed in and took the picture.

The Wheatfields: 09-18-10; 7pm; Rexburg, ID; f 8; 1/200; Kodak P850

I put the blue sky on top of the grain blades and then used the color burn blending mode. To do the type I used the horizontal type mask tool and typed The Wheatfields in the field area. Then I added a drop shadow and put it on top of the blended pictures.
Color Study
Blue can represent happiness and optimism and it is one of my favorite colors. I love seeing a bright blue sky or the blue of the ocean. Many times blue is taken as being sad, but blue makes me happy and gives me joy.

I was in Sugar City looking for blue things I could take a picture of. It was getting a little later, so there wasn't as much light and I saw a handicap sign and I just really liked the blue. I lighted the exposure on my camera when I took it.

I love taking scenery photographs. They're probably my favorite type of photo to shoot. The majority of photographs I take are scenery. I went hiking with my family when I was home last summer close to my home on the border of Utah and Arizona. I see these this amazing scenery and I just so bad want to get it in photo and these are some that turned our great. The others were taken southeast of Rexburg in a place that many know as the Haunted Swing. I didn't know this was the haunted swing at the time and just thought it was a beautiful place and wanted to get it in photo. I don't know a lot about the settings on cameras so I just took them with the regular setting.
